I work for a revalively small NGO (the World Development Movement, wdm.org.uk [wdm.org.uk] - most famous things we've done include MakePovertyHistory and starting the FairTrade foundation)and we do a lot of online actions - these usually require our supporters to email people through our website. Although I've done a bit of work to make these more effective, I do wonder if asking our online activists to email all the time gets a bit repetitive. So I was wondering - what kind of online actions do you do / have you done and are there any that stood out? or is there an online action that you think would work really well and you'd love to see? |

I am a college student and publish a journal to hundreds of people and I include banners so people can stay informed. For example, One.org is a favorite organization. I mail letters to congress and boycott certain products or corporations when they really mess up. I receive letters and emails daily from all over the country. Care2.com has an online community that is active in a lot of worthy programs for women, children, animals. etc. Online activism fits into my busy life-style and maybe it actually does make a difference. |

I am teaching a class to undergrads on global inequalities and I'd really like to figure out how to incorporate web activism though it may have to wait for next year.
p.s. tried to check out your site, but it appears to be down at the moment. |

| PennyN | Sep 30, 2007 7:25pm | | Are you asking what has the biggest impact, or what kind of things "online activists" like to do? I try to click through on every "send an e-mail to..." request that comes to me, which takes only a few seconds each, and it doesn't bore me. For bigger/more ambitious actions, often I will mean to do them but not get around to it, especially if it's something I'm supportive of but not one of the areas I'm most passionate about. So I think you should definitely keep going on the e-mails, but maybe try to think up other actions AS WELL AS (rather than instead of) e-mails? |
